How It Works
The Healthy U program is designed to combat childhood obesity in three ways: - Health education.
- Physical education.
- Family involvement.
Health Education The Healthy U program teaches children about nutrition and how to identify, practice and adopt healthy eating habits. The program encourages changes in behavior that support healthy eating patterns. Children learn facts about healthy living and are encouraged to live a healthier lifestyle. Physical Education The physical education component is an evidence-based program that incorporates health-related fitness, skill, competency and cognitive understanding about the importance of physical activity. Instruction provides a variety of learning experiences that address the wide-range of student abilities in the physical education class. An emphasis on non-elimination games provides moderate-to-vigorous physical activity to keep kids moving and having fun. Family Involvement Involving and educating parents about the program's objectives and goals helps families better understand the Healthy U program. This education leads to a healthier home environment for participating children and their families. YMCAs will host open houses and other activities to further involve parents and increase their participation.
